PRELOGUE: Donation of posthumous body and deceased-donor’s organ transplantation are important and sensitive issues having enourmous scientific and social values. The primary scientific and educative importances are (i) Anatomical Examination, (ii) Medical Research, and (iii) Education and Training. However, the issues of organ transplantation from the donated deceased bodies are getting momentum globaly for the marvel of medical research. This truly needs scientific and technological understanding of the different stakeholders including medical professionals, administrators, policy makers, members of the civil society, and finally, the people. Besides scientific and technical issues, there are many existing social beliefs and taboos as well as legal and ethical aspects, which are not less important to be addressed to achieve success of this movement. Keeping primarily all these in the backdrop, the project was formulated with the aims (i) to raise scientific understanding of posthumous body donation among people, (ii) to sensitize people about different aspects of organ transplantation and usefulness of transplantation from a posthumous donor, and (iii) to help enriching medical research and education through posthumous body donation.
WORKS PERFORMED 1. The Working and Technical Committees were formed on Feb 28, 2016, which were duly approved by the Executive and General Bodies of Ganadarpan. (ii) Technical Committee: (a) Dr. Siti Roy Chowdhury (Chair Person), Plastic Surgeon (b) Dr. Siddartha Chakraborty, Cardio Thorasic Surgeon (c) Dr. Arpita Roy Chowdhury, Nephrologist (d) Dr. Debasis Banerjee, Transplant Surgeon (e) Dr. Amitava Roy Chowdhury, Eye Surgeon 2. Preparatory Meetings (i) 1st Meeting: Altogether 42 number of Non Govt. and Voluntary Organizations of Kolkata and Suberban areas, who are involved and / or interested in similar type of activities viz. posthumous body, organ and tissue donation, and transplantation were invited to discuss all pros and cons of the project. In first preparatory meeting that was held on March 06, 2016, out of 42, only 18 number of Non Govt. and Voluntary Organizations participated with enthucism. The session started with filling-up of a questionnaire (a sample filled-in questionnaire is attached herewith as Annexure - I), followed by a welcome address and general discussion by Mr. Brojo Roy, then the History and importance of Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation was discussed by the Cardio-thoracic Surgeon, Dr. Siddartha Chakraborty, followed by a brief deliberation by Dr. P.B. Chakraborty on the aims and objectives of the project as well as expectation from the organizations in relation to the project (Plates- 1A-D). The meeting ended through an interactive session. (ii) 2nd Meeting (a) The second Preparatory meeting was held on April 24, 2016 to finalize materials to be prepared for Awareness Campaign. It was decided to prepare a multi-lingual booklet addressing frequently asked questions on Posthumous Body Donation in Bengali, English, Hindi, Assamese, Oriya and Urdu. The responsibility was given to the following members- Mr. Brojo Roy for compiling the informations Ms. Tripti T. Chowdhury, Editor Dr. Pulin B. Chakraborty, Member, Editorial Board (b) It was also decided to publish a compendium of articles related to Organ donation and Transplantation from the competent persons involved with the movement at various capacities. Responsibility was given to Mr. Brojo Roy and Ms. Tripti Chowdhury. Technical Committee Meeting: Under the Chairmanship of Dr. Siti Roy Chowdhury, the meetings of the Technical Committee (Plates -2 A & B) were held on February 25, 2016, March 05 and 09, 2016 along with the fellow members to develop and design the material(s) for conducting Training and/or Workshops intended for Junior Doctors as well as Medical and Nursing students, besides the materials to be developed on Popular Talk for common people. WORKS COMPLETED 1. Invitations sent to the concerned organizations of Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Bihar, Odissa and Jharkhand for conducting Workshop-cum-Training. 2. Booklet entitled, “Posthumous Body Donation in Question and Answer”, has been prepared in English and then translated to the following languages- · Hindi · Bengali · Assamese · Odiya · Urdu Most of the booklets are in ready- to- publish stage (Annexures- II-VII) 3. Articles for the Compandium entitled, Prosongo Moronottar Deha Daan are being collected for compilation in print-ready form. 4. Four Slides for Workshop-cum-Training have been made ready by the Technical Committee. Following subject areas have been covered- · Science of Organ Transplantation · History of Organ and Tissue Transplantation · Overview of Posthumous Body Donation · Legal and Social Aspects of Posthumous Body and Organ Donation · Organ Transplantation – A Global Scenario
5. People are regularly pledging under the project. Total number of pledge till date is around 100. 6. Action taken for Dynamic up-gradation of the Static Web-site of Ganadarpan for uploading the information of the pledgee, pledged their body during the project period. 7. An undergraduate student of Mass Communication has joined as an Internee of the project. WORKS IN PROGRESS: 1. TENTATIVE PROGRAMME ON POPULAR TALK AT MEDICAL COLLAGES, WEST BENGAL Following are the Medical College and Hospitals in West Bengal will be covered under the project, along with the Key Resource Persons of the event in the respective Colleges.The target groups are Junior Doctors and Medical and Nursing students. Dates will be decided in consultation with the respective Principals to whom the request letters have already been sent. 2. TENTATIVE PROGRAMME ON BOTH WORKSHOP & POPULAR TALK AT DIFFERENTEASTERN & NORTH EASTERN STATES
